Satyam sheds light on an overlooked aspect of farming – the role of a rakhandar, or the night guard who protects the farmlands from animals and people. ‘Protection’ is often assigned towards humans in urban contexts but in rural areas it is directed towards food or produce in the farm. These observations come to light as the concept and role of the rakhandar shifts from the farmlands to the urban site. The contradiction of the same job profile is commented upon in the project. In this way, the work is also performative in nature through its research processes and presentation as a video installation.
